Background Statement
KUNC was established in 1967 as part of the University of Northern Colorado. In 2001, Community Radio for Northern Colorado was born when a group of community volunteers raised $2 million in 20 days to purchase KUNC's license from the University of Northern Colorado and preserve the station's independent voice. On February 29, 2016 Community Radio for Northern Colorado expanded and launched our full time music discovery station, 105.5 The Colorado Sound.
KUNC was the first Colorado public radio station to join NPR and has long been recognized as an innovative leader in public broadcasting. KUNC introduced the following programs to listeners in Colorado: All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Weekend Edition and The Moth.
KUNC was the first public radio station in Colorado to utilize a series of translators to extend programming services to the rural Eastern plains and mountain communities of Northern Colorado. We currently have five stations and 14 translators to provide public radio programming to communities from Julesburg to Steamboat Springs and Fort Collins to Salida.
On February 29th, 2016 KUNC launched its full-time music discovery radio station, The Colorado Sound. The Colorado Sound introduces listeners to the best new releases and provides a radio home to well-established, quality artists that reflect the unique traits of the Colorado lifestyle. The Colorado Sound successfully blends a variety of genres like folk, soul, blues, and rock to create a one-of-a-kind listening experience. The Colorado Sound is committed to being an advocate for the local music scene, including highlighting Colorado musicians. The Colorado Sound aims to strengthen communities through a shared love of music.
KUNC has earned honors from the Radio and Television News Directors Association's prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards, the Associated Press, the Colorado Broadcasters Association, the Public Radio Program Directors Association and Public Radio News Directors Incorporated.
