La Plata County Humane Society is an open admission shelter and private non-profit serving La Plata County in southwest Colorado. LPCHS has been serving our community since 1971! Each year, we provide shelter, protection, and care for more than 2,000 pets in need and provide low-cost services to another 2,000 owned pets. We provide the following services: adoption, animal protection, lost & found, licensing, low-cost spay/neuter, vaccination and microchipping, and free trap-neuter-release for community cats.
Year after year, LPCHS successfully rehomes 90%, or more, of the animals in our care, earning LPCHS recognition as a no-kill shelter.
Since 2018, we have increased the number of pets served through our low-cost services by 97%!

The purpose of La Plata County Humane Society is to enhance and protect the lives of companion animals by ensuring the provision of sustenance, safety and shelter, educating the community regarding humane treatment of animals, and preventing pet overpopulation.
2023 was an incredible year for the La Plata County Humane Society! Through the hard work of our staff, volunteers, and supporters, we've been able to continue providing essential services to companion animals and pet owners. Last year, we served a total of 4,077 animals, with a live success rate of 95%. Our adoption program thrived in 2023, with 614 dogs and 1,162 cats finding their forever homes. We also successfully reunited 386 dogs and 85 cats with their owners. Our low-cost clinics provided services to 1,500+ animals, helping ensure that pet owners in our community have access to affordable vaccines and spay/neuter services. We collaborated with 19 other animal welfare organizations to save more lives through transfers both to and from our facility. This spirit of cooperation allows us to expand our reach and ensure that no animal is left without a chance at a better life. Our volunteers are the heart of our organization, and in 2023, they contributed a remarkable 7,743 hours of service! Their dedication and passion make it possible for us to continue our mission and maintain our high standards of care. We are deeply grateful for their hard work and commitment.
