Background Statement
The San Benito Health Program is located within the state of Peten in Guatemala. This is a remote region of the country and underserved by most basic government services including health care, transportation, and education. The San Benito Health Program is operated independently yet in coordination with the San Benito Parish of the Catholic Church.
The San Benito Health Program supports community health workers for 25 rural communities. The core health team, comprised of four full time advanced promoters and an accountant, maintains a clinic in the central area of the region to support the regional network of health workers and to provide clinical services to 10 to 15 patients each day. The clinic and rural communities provide primary health care services to 2000 people each year including women's health care, prenatal care, common childhood illnesses, nutrition and oral health. As well they provide consistent year round services to patients with chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma.
Concern America provided seed funding and technical support for six years; 2000 - 2006. The next phase of funding came from two sources: an individual donor whose contributions were funneled through the Community Catholic Foundation in St. Paul Minneapolis and Trocaire, which is an Irish charity.
Recently an individual donor has provided funding through a fiscal partnership that the program has established with Mountains and Plains Institute for Lifelong Learning and Service, a 501c3 non-profit organization in Fort Collins, CO. The program is seeking additional new partners to sustain the funding of this invaluable work.
Monies donated to this program pay for the health team salaries, continuing education trainings for health workers, promoters, and to purchase medicines, supplies, and equipment for the program.
