Spay - Neuter - Educate

Everyone who wants a pet should have one. Yet, not everyone can afford the veterinary care their furry family members need, especially in rural areas. That's where Montrose Animal Protection Agency steps in. We provide financial assistance for lower-income families and individuals in Montrose County to have their pets spayed or neutered through our voucher program.

Here’s what some of our partners have said about MAPA:

  • Rhonda Bingham, Western Slope Animal Hospital: "Here at Western Slope Animal Hospital, we are fortunate to work with MAPA.  Our area is very much economically depressed so the grant money available to our clientsWhiskey & Copper through MAPA goes a long way to helping control our pet population.  In 2023, MAPA was able to help 190 patients in our clinic alone!  The MAPA organization is truly a blessing to our clients, and we appreciate all the volunteers do to make this program such a great success."

  • How to Decode Your CatTomoko Vonseggern, Montrose Animal Services: "MAPA has been providing invaluable support to Montrose Animal Services since 2008.  Their contribution has been pivotal in facilitating spaying and neutering for our community's family-owned pets, advocating for animal welfare, and in generating both awareness and funds. Furthermore, they have been actively involved in providing educational classes, visiting schools and promoting awareness of animal care issues.  We wish to extend our sincere appreciation for their unwavering support and look forward to continuing our collaboration for many years to come."

Since 2013, over 9,300 dogs and cats have been spayed or neutered with our financial help. Imagine the positive impact on our community, shelters, and rescues—not just in Montrose but across the Western Slope and Colorado! MAPA partners with seven veterinary practices to assist Montrose County residents earning $40,000 or less annually in getting their pets spayed or neutered. We also support our local shelter's monthly low-cost clinics for owned pets and a mobile clinic serving very rural areas.

Our educational community outreach includes:

  • Educational events: Annual minicamps for kids (7-12) through the Montrose Recreation District, featuring activities like meeting K9 Officer Tigo, learning from dog trainers, and visiting the Montrose Animal Shelter.

  • Winter classes: Courses like "Dog Training 101," "How to Decode Your Cat," and "Ask a Vet" at the Montrose Animal Shelter.

MAPA has been a part of Montrose since 1974, shifting focus to address pet overpopulation in the late 1990s. We've helped thousands of pets and their families since then.  In 2017, we aided over 1,100 pets and their families, and since 2022 we consistently provide help for about 600 surgeries a year.

If you have a heart for our mission, we ask you to become a member of our family of donors and make a difference that ripples across our community and our state!  MAPA volunteers!

Mission

MAPA’s mission is to promote the welfare of animals through a spay and neuter voucher program for Montrose County lower income families and their pets, and to spread the word about animal care through education and community outreach.

Background Statement

Montrose Animal Protection Agency began in 1974 when a small group of concerned citizens and animal lovers sought to improve the conditions of companion animals in Montrose County. Held together by a shoestring for many years, and serving a wide variety of animal welfare problems, MAPA's volunteers realized the need for pet overpopulation control and realigned their focus in the early 1990s to spay and neuter assistance and educational outreach.

Today's MAPA continues to deepen its efforts in those two areas, supported by a growing group of dedicated volunteers and supporters. All of the grants and donations received are used to work the mission as MAPA is an all-volunteer organization.
