Background Statement
The mission of Million Solar Stars (MSS) is to engage one million students in the process of scaling up solar power at 100% schools globally. Million Solar Stars was formed in 2012 and received 501c3 status from the IRS in 2017. The organization builds on successful pilot solar arrays installed in 2007 at schools in Colorado, Denver Academy and Lyons Middle/Senior High School. These educational solar projects were instigated by student leadership and the non-profit Moonwalk for Earth (MFE) and completed through generous in-kind and grant sponsorships by Namaste Solar and Xcel Energy. With inspiration from students’ science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) leadership, and early pilot solar installation successes through MFE, the Solar Star Challenge is designed as a platform to increase engagement for positive impact and to celebrate “Students as the Stars.” The 2023 Solar Star Challenge aims to expand outreach and increase student engagement to scale up solar at schools globally while adding value to The Taylor Family Foundation’s social responsibility goals.
The 2023 Solar Star Challenge marks the seventh year of commitment to engage students to develop clean energy leadership and STEAM skills. To date, positive impact from the Solar Star Challenge has been demonstrated by the following metrics:
