Testimonials

"I always learn from both presenters and other attendees -- either a new perspective on something I'm struggling with or a new idea about how to tackle different challenges. [NCWIT challenges] me to think differently and act differently... It's also a very engaging conference; we don't just sit back and listen, we work." ~ NCWIT Summit Attendee

"NCWIT has become a force for educating powerful people and entities and successfully making it happen." ~ Professor, Mercy College

"...NCWIT is the best resource for building innovative and high performing cultures." ~ Partner, Ward Howell

"NCWIT is by a wide margin the most successful organization with the goal of broadening participation in the computing disciplines in the United States. It is a leader among organizations working toward these broadening goals across all of the STEM disciplines in the United States. What sets NCWIT apart from all of its peer organizations is its commitment to social science as a basis for action. From its very beginning, NCWIT has been committed to social science to understand the phenomena from both a theoretical and practical perspective, and to the use of rigorous social science methods to evaluate programmatic efforts." ~ William Aspray, Bill and Lewis Suit Professor of Information Technologies, School of Information, University of Texas at Austin, Commenting from research conducted for the Sloan Foundation, 2016

Mission

The National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) is a non-profit community that convenes, equips, and unites change leader organizations to increase the meaningful participation of all women - at the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability status - in the influential field of computing, particularly in terms of innovation and development.

NCWIT is the only national non-profit focused on women's participation in computing across the entire ecosystem, supplying change leaders from more than 1,400 organizations with resources to recruit, retain, and advance women from K-12 and higher education through industry and entrepreneurial careers by providing support, evidence, and action.

Background Statement

The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is a non-profit community of more than 1,400 universities, companies, non-profits, and government organizations nationwide working to increase girls' and women's meaningful participation in computing. NCWIT equips change leaders with resources for taking action in recruiting, retaining, and advancing women from K-12 and higher education through industry and entrepreneurial careers.

Before NCWIT was chartered in 2004 by the National Science Foundation, programs focusing on women and computing existed mostly in isolation - without the benefit of shared best practices, effective resources, communication with others, or national reach. Today, these programs are part of the NCWIT community, creating a far greater impact than if institutions acted alone.
