The Northern Colorado Concert Band is an adult community band that seeks to provide enrichment to our community and our members of all ages through the performance of music. We engage with local schools, non-profits, and composers to encourage and support the joys of musicianship.

The Northern Colorado Concert Band is an adult community band that seeks to provide enrichment to our community and our members through the performance of music. We are composed of musicians of all ages, from retirees to college students, and we also welcome high school students that do not have access to a band program. We create a safe creative outlet for people to explore their artistic selves and find a community within that space, whether it be rehearsing with the group or attending the performances NCCB provides for free across Northern Colorado. Each year we sponsor local composers to create and debut new music in partnership with Chase the Music, a non-profit dedicated to finding performing arts groups and composers to team up to create music for children with critical conditions.
In the summer of 1980, four people determined that there were probably enough musicians in the Greeley-Fort Collins area to form a concert band. So, Jack Meakins, Duane Anderson, Chuck Smith, and Jim Fuller prepared a postcard invitation to all musicians that could be identified. The invite told those interested to come to the Ault High School band room on September 29th for the first rehearsal. 29 people came. Soon, there were 49 musicians under the direction of the late Wayman Walker, and we gave our first concert on November 17th, 1980 at Highland High School in Ault.
Wayman was succeeded by Curtis Johnson, and then by Jay Hatfield who served as conductor until 1991. Jay was followed by UNC doctoral student Gary Schallert (now at Western Kentucky University), and then by Scott Schlup, band director at Lesher JHS, who served until 2000. Scott was followed by Dr. Ron Holleman (conductor of the Ethos Chamber Orchestra) who served until 2005. UNC doctoral student Ronda Street (now Dr. DePriest of Waynedburg University, PA) next served for a year. Our next leader was doctoral student Brian Casey (now Dr. Casey of Houghton College). In the fall of 2007, Bert Aguirre (language arts teacher at South Valley Middle School) became our conductor, and he served for nearly ten years. Starting in Fall 2016, Sebastian Adams (music director at St. Vrain Valley Schools) took the baton.
Over the years, our number has grown from the original four to more than 60 musicians, ranging from ages 15 to 90. Why have we endured for over 40 years? Because we truly enjoy the creative process and coming together to make music!
