$3,000 Goal

The PSIMS motto is “Music for Life”. We exist to develop musical ability and raise awareness of the importance of instrumental music to people of all ages. We celebrate the joy of music through teaching and performance opportunities for musicians of all levels of ability in our community.

We put on four concerts per year: 1) the Band-O-Rama in the spring featuring the PSIMS Community Band sharing the stage with bands from the high school and middle school; 2) the 4th of July concert featuring patriotic music for the community 3) the Community Band Fall Concert showcasing the talent of the Community Band directed by local concert masters; and 4) the festive Heralds of Christmas Concert to celebrate the holidays.

PSIMS Community Band members give back to the community by providing music for the High School and Curtains Up Pagosa musicals at no charge! They also participate in Master Classes for the middle and high school band members, providing specialized instruction on different instruments. PSIMS has provided two scholarships to local students to continue their studies in music as they pursue a higher education. We are raising money this year to purchase a new vibraphone for the high school music department!

Background Statement

PSIMS was officially formed as a 501c(3) in 2012 as a spin off from Curtains up Pagosa (CUP). A group of local musicians had been performing for CUP musicals for many years. To keep the musicians in practice, Sally Neel, then head of CUP, suggested that they organize other performances throughout the year for the community. The first year the fledgling Community Band performed with the high school and middle school in the Spring, calling it the Band-O-Rama with Larry Baisdon and Bill Gottschalk as the conductors. They also played at the Hot Springs Resort as part of the Fourth of July festivities and again at Christmas time as the Heralds of Christmas. After the first year with CUP serving in an administrative capacity, arranging the venues and selling tickets, the Community Band decided to strike out on their own and provide concerts for free. PSIMS was born.
