Testimonials
So many people have been impacted by REC programming. Here are a few of their comments:
REC Parents say:
"REC has been an amazing program for our 3 boys. They have grown so much from the amazing environment it has provided. We will forever be grateful for the support it has provided our family."
"I value that it’s such a safe place that makes learning fun and provides an opportunity to learn more that standard education. The kids are exposed to culture and I find that so important in life. I appreciate the effort of all REC staff, REC is more than an afterschool program to us."
"REC really helped my kids with school work and to be more social. REC gave my kids something to look forward to after a long day of school."
REC students say:
"I'm a senior at Central High School. I moved to the area during the COVID pandemic and felt lost joining a new school amidst a time of chaos. I joined REC as a sophomore to help with this transition. Not only did they help with the transition, they helped me get back on track for graduation. Without REC, I would have dropped out of high school. Instead, I am preparing to graduate and intend to attend Metropolitan State University to study biochemistry and human genetics. I am beyond grateful for REC and the support they have given me. This program has meant a great deal to me and I hope it can continue to do so for future students."
"REC helps me finish my homework, I feel a sense of belonging, and it gives me something to do after school."
"I like going to REC because it makes my day 100% better. It gives me time to do my assignments that I struggle with. I also like REC because it makes me feel better."
Mission
Riverside Education Centers provides Mesa County students with high-quality academic and extracurricular experiences during out-of-school time to foster individual growth and to create community within a safe, diverse, equitable, inclusive environment.
Background Statement
REC was founded in 2006 by Mary Spirio, a former 3rd grade teacher who envisioned an after-school program that could remove the barriers to learning and opportunity that many students face. Her goal was to provide no-cost, after-school tutoring alongside fun and engaging enrichment experiences for the elementary and middle school kids of the Riverside neighborhood.
REC opened in 2006 and served 22 students. In 2024, REC is at 15 local elementary, middle, and high schools, serving over 1,200 K-12 students throughout the Grand Valley. REC enjoys the strong support of many community partners including School District 51 and Colorado Mesa University.
REC's offerings have expanded through the years to provide academic and enrichment opportunities to help students grow to reach their potential and achieve their dreams.
On and off-site enrichment focuses on STEAM (science, technology, arts, engineering, math)-based explorations. Outdoor education and adventure helps students build confidence and resiliency and connect with the larger community. Support for 5th graders moving into 6th grade and 8th graders moving into 9th grades ensures that students stay on track academically. At the high school level, all students graduate with a plan for their future and receive help with college applications and scholarships, job explorations and more.
In addition, meaningful caregiver and parent support is provided to further support families and students.
