Testimonials
I showed up to recruitement a year ago in blue sparkly skates, barely able to stand, like Bambi on ice. I had just started my sobriety journey and I honestly didn't know if I'd ever truly enjoy life without alcohol. Even though I was far from being any good or contributing any skills I received so much support and love from my teammates. As I started gaining skills on the track I started to believe in myself off the track. I was cleared for full contact and played in my first Bout 4 months after learning to skate. Rocky taught me that through dedication bruises, sweat and tears that I can do hard things. I wanted to get tougher, I joined a Crossfit gym. I started to love myself. Rocky not only helped me stay sober but it has helped me enjoy sobriety.-Bethany Biggerstaff
I skate because it makes me feel powerful. Rocky Mountain Roller Derby is important to me because it gives me an outlet to be me.-Janika Hortizuela
The most important thing about Rocky are the other skaters/League members-Angela Hennessy
Every time I moved to a new city or state I joined the local derby league. Roller derby is a ready made community of support and pure fun. It's a place where non-traditional athletes can skate hard and feel good about themselves in world obsessed with image and body size.-Devon Jones
Derby has been my life for the last decade. I skate because it’s a huge apart of my life. My vacations are derby away tournaments. I’ve met some amazing people through derby. Rocky is important to me because it gave me a family in a city I knew no one when I moved here.- Cynthia Mercedes Hopkins
I think physics are humbling. Whether it’s getting hit so hard I was sent vertical, or the feeling of genuine fear from the ref warning 5 seconds, any thoughts of how unattractive, unworthy, or unlovable I am quickly take less priority.-Quinton Rivas
Roller Derby has given me an appreciation for my body and mental toughness like nothing else in my life. It’s always challenging, and not just because we keep changing the rules! There’s a constant stream of new like minded people to befriend. I’ve met some of my very closest friends through derby. Derby is a place where I can be 100% myself. I don’t have to hide any parts of myself to be accepted; that has not always been the case in my life. Derby has taught me to persevere, a lot of things have happened to our league over the years and I’ve seen a lot of people walk away when things get hard (this is a hobby after all). Perseverance is the only thing that hold us together sometimes and I’m a big fan of not giving up on the things I love.-Kendra Montoya
Roller Derby as a sport is about inclusion and celebration, whoever you are, whatever you look like. As someone who struggled with an eating disorder as a kid, and never identified as athletic, it was incredibly healing to discover a team sport where body diversity was a strength and that everyone could contribute to the success of the team no matter what you looked like. In a culture that polices bodies (particularly women's), roller derby is an important force for good. -Kri Burkander
I started skating as a new hobby back in 2016. Fast forward to today and I'm still 100% dedicated to rollerderby. I've been on a few different leagues but RMRD has been so supportive and I truly get more of a real community feel with Rocky than i ever have with any other league I've skated with.-Kayla Monn
