SLC6A1 Connect

A nonprofit organization

SLC6A1 is a top 10 cause of autism and epilepsy, as well as many psychiatric conditions like ADHD, bipolar and schizophrenia. Advancing this gene therapy treatment will not only help those with SLC6A1, but everyone affected by these diseases. We have the opportunity to help a multitude of people.

Testimonials

We have already connected with dozens of families who have experienced the same "nothing can be done" phrase for their affected family members.

Mission

SLC6A1 Connect is a patient advocacy group dedicated to improving the lives of children and families affected by a SLC6A1 mutation. Our focus is to raise awareness and fundraising to advance scientific research that will ultimately result in a cure.

Background Statement

In May 2018, we were told there was nothing that could be done for our son, Maxwell, who was diagnosed with SLC6A1. We were told that once he turned 3, he'd experience debilitating seizures and extreme loss of quality of life. We contacted hundreds of top scientists from across the country and learned that a cure does exist! We just need to raise $1,000,000 to fund the work that it takes to make the cure patient-ready. We also learned that this gene affects a multitude of others with autism, epilepsy, ADHD, and others. SLC6A1 Connect was founded in October 2018 in order to connect other families to our cause and provide support for them.
