San Luis Valley Community Mental Health Center

A nonprofit organization

San Luis Valley Behavioral Health Group (SLVBHG) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health and substance use services across Colorado’s San Luis Valley. Serving the six rural counties of Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache, our mission is to provide access to quality behavioral health services that enrich lives and promote wellness. At SLVBHG, we empower individuals and families to achieve wellness and recovery by addressing mental health challenges and supporting substance use recovery.

For over 50 years, SLVBHG has been committed to delivering compassionate care through a wide range of services, including crisis intervention, outpatient therapy, peer support, school-based mental health programs, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and wrap-around support. We believe that access to quality behavioral health care is essential for creating a thriving community, and we work tirelessly to eliminate barriers to care, ensuring that everyone—regardless of financial or social circumstances—can get the support they need.

As a trusted community partner, we collaborate with local organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and law enforcement to foster a continuum of care that addresses the unique needs of the San Luis Valley, a region that has been historically marginalized and faces significant challenges in health equity, access to services, and socio-economic opportunities.

With your support, we can continue to offer hope, recovery, and healing to those in need while driving systemic change to address the root causes of mental health and substance use challenges.

Mission

To provide access to quality behavioral health services that enrich lives and promote wellness. We are driven by a profound respect for human dignity and a desire to serve the underrepresented, the disenfranchised, and those who experience behavioral distress.

Background Statement

San Luis Valley Behavioral Health Group (SLVBHG) was founded in 1970 in response to the growing need for mental health services in the San Luis Valley, a geographically isolated and economically challenged region of southern Colorado. Our founders recognized that the residents of this rural area faced unique barriers to accessing mental health care, including stigma, poverty, and limited healthcare infrastructure. In response, SLVBHG has grown to become the go-to behavioral health provider in the region, offering an array of critical services aimed at promoting wellness, recovery, and resilience in our diverse communities.

The San Luis Valley is home to some of the highest poverty rates in Colorado, compounded by long-standing social and economic marginalization. Many of our clients experience chronic stressors, including generational trauma, substance use, housing insecurity, and limited employment opportunities. Despite these challenges, the people of the San Luis Valley are resilient, and SLVBHG has worked alongside them, adapting our programs and services to meet evolving community needs.

Over the decades, we have expanded our reach through partnerships with schools, healthcare providers, and other local organizations. We now provide a wide range of services, including school-based mental health programs, mobile medication-assisted treatment (MAT), crisis intervention, and trauma-informed therapy. Our agency is deeply rooted in the belief that equitable access to quality behavioral health services is essential for every community member’s well-being.

Through compassionate care, collaboration, and innovation, SLVBHG continues to support the San Luis Valley, advocating for lasting change and empowering individuals to build brighter futures.
