Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema

A nonprofit organization

Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema is a niche film festival where choreography meets cinematography.

With an expansive definition of dance and an appreciation for highly experimental and interdisciplinary forms, this unique festival exposes diverse audiences to a variety of film, video, and performance possibilities. We facilitate gatherings from educational workshops to public screenings to professional development for artists. While our roots remain proudly in Boulder County (Colorado, USA), our branches reach many locales nationally and internationally, and continue to grow.

Sans Souci is a Boulder-based international dance film festival that has been screening short dance-centric shorts, documentaries, music videos, and more since 2003.

We have screened over 800 dance films from 40+ countries across 6 continents at local, national and international events, exhibiting the work of hundreds of artists, and we are committed to utilizing this resource to build community.

Now in our 21st season, we are one of the longest running international dance film festivals in existence, and the only one with a dedicated creative aging program.

Colorado venues where we have partnered to produce screenings:  Museum of Boulder, Dairy Arts Center, University of Colorado, University of Northern Colorado, MSU Denver, Boulder Public Library, Bus Stop Gallery in North Boulder Art District,  Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities, and Lafayette's Collective Community Art Center and Public Library.

Mission

The Sans Souci mission is two-fold:

• To provide a space for the community to share an experience of dance cinema

• To elevate the ever-changing nature, culture, and field of dance cinema

We seek to fulfill our mission in these ways:

• enacting policies that move toward a more racially just and socially equitable landscape for dance cinema, and holding ourselves accountable to those standards

• making dance cinema accessible to more audiences, to educate, to entertain, to provoke, to inspire, to develop appreciation and appetite for the work

• giving exposure to artists from all walks of life who are making work within this field

• instigating transnational connection between artists, and between artists and audiences

• encouraging an expansive definition of dance and an appreciation for experimental interdisciplinary forms, including mixed-media works and a variety of film, video, and live performance possibilities

• fostering a forum for the evolving conversation between dance and cinema – celebrating both and their potential to cross-pollinate

• providing a quality, professional presentation setting, and taking meticulous care in exhibiting our artists’ work

• bringing the work of international artists to Boulder, Colorado, USA, and sharing the work of our contributing artists, including local Colorado artists, with a wider national and international audience

• providing support and feedback to our applicants, and ongoing opportunities to dance filmmakers

• actively programming and promoting diversity – of race, ethnicity, gender, ability, age, geography, economic status, experience level, dance forms, film styles and more – among our audiences, artists, and boards, and among the films we screen

• snacking together – we promise to have treats to share at our screenings whenever possible

Background Statement

We are working toward a world:

• that enables interconnectedness of local, national, and international arts communities

• where all communities have equitable access to dance cinema, and are exposed to a full spectrum of technology and performance possibilities

• in which artists have access to a scaffold of support: relevant education, professional development, networking and funding opportunities

that promotes disruption, wonder, provocation, inspiration in its artists and audiences

• where facilitators lead with unpretentious compassion

• where, by understanding community needs and serving as a gathering place, Sans Souci continues to build audiences and their appreciation of dance cinema
