Senior CommUnity Meals

A nonprofit organization

A nourishing meal is just the beginning. At Senior CommUnity Meals, we’re a team of staff and volunteers dedicated to helping older adults live healthier lives. We serve nutritious grab and go meals at various pick up sites, and homebound meal delivery – offering each with a generous helping of companionship.

Last year, we served more than 100,000 meals to 2,600 older Coloradans, over a 4,600 square-mile area. Many of the older persons we provide nourishing meals for are the very farmers who fed our communities years ago. Without the meals we deliver, they and others in our program would have no food to eat.

Our mission to ensure older adults don’t go hungry grows out of respect for the human spirit, and the belief that the right to dignity doesn’t diminish with age. At Senior CommUnity Meals, our philosophy can be summed up simply: we care for those we serve like we’d care for members of our own family.

Homebound Meal Delivery: If you’re 60 years of age or older, and have been assessed as homebound, you can enjoy hot, nutritious meals delivered right to your door by friendly, dedicated Senior CommUnity Meals volunteers. When you live in remote locations, and in some other instances, we deliver wholesome, frozen selections for your convenience.

In addition to age and homebound-status requirements, other criteria for eligibility apply in specific, limited circumstances. To learn if you or someone you know is eligible for homebound delivery, call us today, or email.

Participants, Contributors and Volunteers:  Senior CommUnity Meals is a donation-based program. We’re grateful for all grants and donor gifts we receive that allow us to help older adults. Region 10 Area Agency on Aging is our primary funding source.

Because of this generosity, no person aged 60 and older will be denied service for unwillingness or inability to make a voluntary contribution for meals they receive.

We depend on volunteers to help prepare and serve meals, to clean up, and to socialize with older adults in our program. Won’t you join us? Call or email today.

Mission

To maximize the independence and well being of older adults in Montrose, Delta and San Miguel counties through provision of quality, nutritional meals and supporting services.

Background Statement

VOANS (Volunteers of America National Services) Senior CommUnity Meals, Inc. (SCM) was established in 2009 to fill a void in nutritional care for seniors located in Western Colorado. At the request of Delta, Montrose and San Miguel counties, VOANS-SCM was asked to come into the area and replace the struggling senior meals provider, Columbine Services. VOANS-SCM was initially funded with a $250,000 grant from the Colorado Trust to continue operations.

Established as a separate corporation, SCM was born from - yet works in conjunction with - VOANS Senior CommUnity Care (known nationally as PACE, or Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). Operating since July 1, 2009, the new organization, completely separate from Volunteers of America programs in Denver and other programs in Colorado, operates with the mission to identify and serve the basic needs of the most vulnerable individuals and families in the communities we serve.

SCM began providing an average of 10,000 meals per month to seniors in the counties of Montrose, Delta and San Miguel, covering 4,669 square miles of territory, serving the following cities and towns: Montrose, Olathe, Nucla/Naturita, Norwood, Delta, Cedaredge, Paonia and Hotchkiss.
