Sheep Mountain Alliance is a grassroots environmental organization in Telluride, Colorado.

Founded in 1988 to protect Sheep Mountain from logging advances, our Alliance remains a voice for our environment and the communities who are a part of it. We use grassroots organizing to advocate for public lands policies that protect ecosystems, lands, wildlife and water. We dispute mining activity on sensitive landscapes and promote clean and renewable energy transitions. In our community, we work alongside our partners to create inclusive and equitable access to public lands in the Telluride region.

For the past thirty six years, SMA has been the primary environmental voice for the Telluride region. Add YOUR voice to protect places you love.

Some of our current projects include:

- Building support for landscape-level protections for the Dolores River Canyons in Montrose and Mesa Counties in Southwest Colorado. The Dolores River is one of Colorado's last, best wild places - and it's time we permanently protect it!

- Finding creative approaches to maintaining and bolstering public lands protections through participation in land management planning processes and direct community action.

- Working with community partners to create inclusive and equitable outdoor spaces on our public lands through hosting free, bilingual events including a downhill ski day, ice climbing excursion, Via Ferratta trip, and summer hiking series.

- Collaborating with EcoAction Partners to advance environmental justice initiatives in the Telluride region through bilingual workshops on drought and wildfire, the public comment process, income-qualified weatherization, and so much more.

Mission

SMA uses advocacy, activism and outreach to protect the environment and the people who are part of it in Southwest Colorado.

Background Statement

SMA began in 1988 when a group of concerned citizens halted a logging project just below timberline on the slopes of majestic Sheep Mountain, south of Telluride at Lizard Head Pass. Empowered by the effectiveness of their grassroots efforts and inspired by the environmental protection work needed in our fast-growing region, these activists formed SMA.

Since that time, SMA has worked diligently with individuals, organizations, local landowners, and public land managers on public lands issues, private land conservation, and wildlife habitat protection. SMA partners with regional and national groups including the Southern Rockies Conservation Alliance, The Wilderness Society, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, San Juan Citizen's Alliance, the Telluride Mountain Club, the San Miguel Watershed Coalition, and the Dolores Coalition.
