Giving Activity

Mission

To empower students to lead their own postsecondary career pathways within the context of an exciting science, technology, and environmental, agricultural, and design systems learning environment.

Background Statement

STEAD’s “learning made real” approach has regional and national significance, setting new standards for STEM instruction while creating next generation leaders. STEAD’s unique pedagogical approach integrates project-based learning with five career and technical education pathways including: animal, plant, food, environmental science, and advance placement. Students are exposed to each pathway, select one, and pursue elective agriculture science classes related to that pathway. By 12th grade, students are ready for "real work" off campus with an industry partner.

Current Programming: STEAD’s career exploration includes job counseling and shadowing, ensuring all students participate in internships that reflect their choice of career possibilities. Students can graduate with industry recognized certifications in their chosen pathway and can expect to earn a living wage based on their chosen career. For the 2025-26 school year, STEAD is serving 9th – 12th grade students, totaling 420 students.

The Founding Board was inspired to create The STEAD School’s unique educational model through a combination of academic research, emerging trends in agribusiness, industry experts and partners, and the historic geographic location of the proposed high school in the Agriculture Innovation Triangle. Per Colorado State University’s November 2014 Report The Emergence of an Innovation Cluster in the Agricultural Value Chain along Colorado’s Front Range, “innovation cluster” is defined as “a geographically proximate set of interconnected companies and associated institutions in a particular field ... [where] co-location of the various stakeholders accelerated knowledge sharing and development of new products and services.” STEAD students will participate in this Agriculture Innovation Cluster ecosystem through internships with industry partners and opportunities for college credit with post secondary institutions like Colorado State University, local community colleges, and technical trade schools.
