Steamboat Dance Theatre scholarship testimonials
"I started dance when I was about 4 yrs old and have loved it ever since. When I was about 11 my dance teacher moved to Denver, so I took I year off. After my short break from dancing, I started again doing hip-hop with Elevation Dance Studio.
The SDT scholarship has allowed me to continue my passion of dancing. This scholarship has also allowed me to perform in the recitals. Lastly, the SDT scholarship has allowed me to try different styles of dancing to see which I enjoy most, such as hip-hop or jazz.
A few of the things that I love most about dance are: getting to decide what your favorite style of dance is, learning a new fun but sometimes challenging dance every month, and getting to perform the dance you've worked so hard on for so many months in the recital.
My). future aspirations about dance are to continue dancing until I go to college, try out even more styles of dance and choose the one I am really passionate about, and possibly keep dancing in college or even when I graduate from it."

I started dancing when I was eight years old. I saw "Buckets & Tap Shoes" at the Strings Music Festival and fell in love with Tap and asked my Mom to see about lessons. I helped choreograph my very first recital piece. I went to a weeklong dance camp at Cherry Creek Dance in Denver which exposed me to other forms of dance. Even though I thought that Tap would be my favorite part of the camp it turned out that I really enjoyed Ballet. Elevation Dance Studio started a "Scholarship Program" that requires an audition and you must be chosen to participate. I have been selected each year and have danced five or six days a week for the past three years since the program started.
My family has financial challenges due to my younger brother. We take many trips to Denver for him to see the Doctors at Children's Hospital. The scholarships that I have received from SDT have allowed me to take more than the one class a week that my family could afford. This has truly allowed me to really continue to grow in dance and help inspire more boys to take dance.
I love that dance helps me let go and forget about all of my worries.
My dream is to become a professional dancer. I would like to be on Broadway someday. SDT has really helped me see that this is my passion and a career in dance could make me happy and fulfilled.

" I just would love for you to tell the board how amazing I think it is that you all do what you do. So many of these kids truly owe their whole dance career to SDT. If it wasn't for you there would just be NO WAY for them to dance and these are the kids I personally know need it the most, and have fully committed all their free time to dance: (_______, ________.) I'm sure there are more. And knowing how much little ______ loves dance, going on her 4th year, and her dad is just so sick with Hodgkin's and God willing a good prognosis in the future...I mean what you're all doing for these families.
I'm tearing up writing this....
I just want you all to know how I try to do my part to make sure these kids stay in dance when they love it so much, by discounting their rate significantly and allowing them to pay me when they can. But thanks to SDT or they wouldn't be able to do it at all. SDT board members should smile everyday knowing how happy they make those who so need both dancing and the financial aid in which to do so. On behalf of them I am forever grateful and will never forget how lucky we all are to live in a community with STEAMBOAT DANCE THEATRE!!!"

"I wanted to send a quick "thank you" while I had a moment. We are in the middle of our 2nd move in 7 months and are quite busy packing and moving things. We have received a few scholarships the past few months and I can't express how grateful we are for this. We just moved to South Routt around 7 months ago and having this available to us has made such a huge impact for our daughter ______. This is the first time she has ever been able to participate in anything like this. If it were not for the scholarship that we receive, we would not be able to have her participate in dance. We are so thankful to all of those who contribute to make this happen for our daughter. She is home schooled and participating in this has really has allowed her to make many new friends. We are extremely grateful."

"______ is a hard working student and is very appreciative to be able to take dance to further her work towards studying musical theater. We as a family of 6 have an income of approximately $60,000...
Our mission is "to engage, educate, and enrich the communities of the Yampa Valley through dance and movement."
Steamboat Dance Theatre (SDT) was formed in 1972 in order to offer local dancers the opportunity to perform, share a common bond, and to enrich the community through performance art.
For over 50 years, SDT has given community members in the Yampa Valley the opportunity to access dance education and culture and gain experience in choreographing, performing, producing, and learning from professionals throughout the country.
Steamboat Dance Theatre serves the Yampa Valley community by providing access to various forms of dance education, culture and performance. SDT has a diverse portfolio of programs that is designed to provide the local community with opportunities to dance and learn more about dance. Our major current programs are listed below:
• Annual Concert: Our highest profile program is the Annual Concert, which is annual community dance performance that SDT hosts, organizes and funds. Each year we invite the entire community to choreograph and audition for our Annual Concert. The Concert is our main fundraiser and our biggest expense as an organization. Any revenues from the Concert fund our current programs. Each year we have about 200 volunteers dance, choreograph and produces our concert and nearly 2,000 community members attend.
• Scholarship Program: Through our Scholarship Program we provide scholarships to community members in need of financial assistance for the purpose of attending dance classes. We have recently expanded this program to include our "Fifth Position" Scholarships which are larger scholarships offered to dance students planning to participate in competitions or workshops. SDT provides scholarships to people of all ages that can demonstrate they are in need of financial assistance. Over the past ten years the total amount granted in a year has grown from $4,000 to $16,000. We are hoping to increase funding for this program upwards of $20,000 as the need in the Yampa Valley continues to grow.
• School/Community Outreach: Through this program we bring dance culture into the local schools and partner organizations such as Yampa Valley Autism, Horizon's and Casey's Pond.
• Community Outreach: Through this program we offer various dance related events that benefit the community at large such as the Dance on Film series, Master Classes, affordable Community Dance and Movement classes, and more.
All together our programs aim to bring dance in many different forms to community members of all backgrounds, means, and experience.
