The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is a nonprofit organization that brings world-class orchestral music to the Yampa Valley. In addition to our performances, the SSO is committed to growing the next generation of musicians through our educational programs and offerings.
These programs include:
- Steamboat Springs High School Orchestra: The SSO funds and staff the high school program, providing students the opportunity to study orchestra music under professional violinist, Teresa Steffen Greenlee. Without this program, students would not have the prerequisites needed to study at the collegiate level.
- Immersion Weekends: Students of all ages and abilities gather twice a year for immersive experiences with Music Director and Conductor, Ernest Richardson and professional members of the orchestra. This unique opportunity allows players throughout the region to come together and create an orchestra that performs a free celebration concert.
- String Sprouts: Our newest program (launched this September!) is a revolutionary program providing five years of free violin lessons for under-resourced children in Steamboat Springs! This national program is backed by research that shows the positive impact studying a string instrument can have on a student's math and reading scores.
By funding innovative programs like these, the SSO is helping to develop the skills and talents of young musicians in the community unlike any other nonprofit in Northwest Colorado.
Joining the SSO's musical family means supporting our mission to integrate the experience of orchestral music into the heart of the community, delivering outstanding professional performances, and providing accessible and compelling music education
