No One Should Have to Choose Between Life-Saving Treatment and Basic Needs

Breast cancer can turn lives upside down, and the financial burden it brings is often overwhelming. Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket costs for initial treatment can exceed $5,000—five times more than the average American has in savings. No one should have to choose between affording essentials like housing and groceries or getting the treatment they desperately need.

In memory of Diana Lynn Trujillo, who battled metastatic breast cancer until her passing in 2019, her friends and family created the Diana Lynn Trujillo Financial Assistance Program. This vital program is dedicated to removing the financial barriers that prevent lower-income breast cancer patients in Colorado from completing their treatment.

DLTFAP provides essential support for those in active treatment with an annual income at or below 300% of the federal poverty line. We assist with costs related to housing, transportation, groceries, medications, co-pays, and more, ensuring that patients can focus on their health rather than their financial struggles.

Your Impact in Action

In fiscal year 2024, Komen’s Financial Assistance Program distributed over $171,000 to more than 300 individuals in Colorado fighting breast cancer. This support is critical; it helps cover everyday expenses so patients can stay engaged in their care and maintain their quality of life during a challenging time.

Join Us in Making a Difference

We need your support to continue this vital work. With your help, we can ensure that no one in Colorado has to face the impossible decision of choosing between life-saving treatment and putting food on the table for their families. Together, we can bridge the gap and provide hope, support, and essential resources to those who need it most.

This Colorado Gives Day, consider donating to the Diana Lynn Trujillo Financial Assistance Program. Your generosity can change lives, helping individuals focus on healing rather than hardship. Thank you for standing with us in the fight against breast cancer.

Testimonials

"Dear Susan G. Komen Foundation, I am writing to thank you, for your generous gift. I cannot even express how much this will help me pay off a large surgeon's bill, from my cancer surgery. I worry about paying this bill, day and night. I live alone on social security so being gifted this has left me in awe. Forever thankful."

“I had spent quite a lot on breast cancer treatment within such a short time. It was becoming increasingly difficult to cope with my financial burden.” – Esiri, Komen Financial Assistance Recipient

"Before I went to bed last night, I checked my phone messages and to my surprise, you wonderful people left me a message stating I had been accepted for relief from rent," she said. "My mind that is normally racing because of all I'm going through, now is feeling calm. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

“Upon losing my only source of income and insurance, I became depressed and overwhelmed. I had no idea how I was going to focus on treatments, bills and daily living expenses. My Patient Navigator referred me to the program and within a week I was approved. Thank you so much, Susan G. Komen!” – Tonya, Komen Financial Assistance Recipient

"Being without health insurance for 5 months has been scary let alone have an abnormal mammogram requiring biopsy. Received the info and financial assistance needed instead of postponing much needed tests. Was recommended from a coworker. Very glad I did."

Komen® organization and the beginning of a global movement. To date, we've invested more than $3.3 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Our efforts helped reduce deaths from breast cancer by 40 percent between 1989-2016 and we won't stop until our promise is fulfilled.
