Take Note Colorado

A nonprofit organization

Take Note is a unique, statewide initiative that strives to provide youth (grades K-12) access to music education. Donations support the grant program that funds organizations that provide contemporary, inclusive, culturally relevant music instruction to youth who lack access to these opportunities.

Testimonials

Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers is the Artist Ambassador who supports the organization and its fundraising efforts: "Music is often overlooked as an outlet and a way to get through hard times...Get people involved in music at an early age so that it is not so formalized and intimidating to them."
Grantees consistently share the positive impacts of the Take Note funding. Here are a few examples of their feedback.
Kid Pan Alley: "All my students had such a great time creating their songs, and it was so amazing to see them collaborating on a large group project like this. As I was watching, I got to see the 'lightbulb moment' when they figured out the connection between speech and rhythm. I had many students tell me afterwards that they wanted to start writing songs on their own after doing the workshop!"
Cultural Enrichment Center of Fort Collins: "Take Note's funding allows the Cultural Enrichment Center to offer our Black youth guitar lessons in the comfort of our culturally-relevant space. Our students are thrilled to check out an acoustic guitar and take it home to practice Matt's lessons each week, as well as explore their own creative connection to the instrument."
A Child's Song: "A 15-year-old student began the first week in a chair with her arms crossed and no participation. Each week ACS's instructor would see her drop her guard down a little, starting with tapping her toe or hands, touching a drum, and eventually unfolding her arms. About four weeks into the session, she began taking on the lead part of the drum circle and would ask to be challenged with new rhythms to try. She became an integral part of the circle and one of the strongest players."

Mission

Take Note Colorado's mission is to provide all youth (Grades K-12) in Colorado access to musical instruments and instruction, supporting programs that are inclusive, student-centered and culturally responsive and empower all students to participate in music.

Background Statement

Take Note Colorado (TNC) is a nonprofit 501c3, founded in 2017 with the leadership of U.S Senator John Hickenlooper (former Governor); philanthropist and musician Libby Anschutz; Isaac Slade from The Fray; and, the Bohemian Foundation.

In 2024, Isaac Slade, formerly with The Fray, re-engaged to lead the organization and its 14-member volunteer Board of Directors. Take Note also continues to be supported by musicians, government leaders, and philanthropists.

In 2024, the organization enhanced its partnerships to reach youth across the state and fulfill its mission. Take Note has invested resources in the following partnerships that align with its goals: Boys & Girls Clubs in Colorado (eight individual clubs' music education programs), Colorado State University's Sterling Extension Office, and Music Will.
