Background Statement
For over 35 years, The Literacy Project has witnessed firsthand how English proficiency opens doors: it gives parents the tools to advocate for their children, helps job-seekers pursue better opportunities, gives school-aged students confidence and the tools to succeed, and provides non-English speakers a sense of belonging and agency in their daily lives.
The Literacy Project is a trusted presence in Eagle County, providing free, personalized literacy education that meets learners where they are. Our teachers and volunteer tutors go beyond academic instruction, often helping our students prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam, fill out immigration paperwork, study for driver’s license tests, and gain the practical skills they need to be independent and confident members of the community. We believe that the services we provide are more important now than ever, not only in a practical sense, but also to reassure our students that they are valued members of our Eagle County community.
The Literacy Project was founded in 1990 and operates out of all three branches of the Eagle County Library District.
