Celebrating Milestones in Community Journalism

Join Our Mission

Our mission is to inform, inspire, and build community by fostering diverse and independent journalism. At Sopris Sun, we are dedicated to providing inclusive, impactful news that reflects the diverse perspectives and needs of our community. Through our publications, The Sopris Sun and Sol del Valle, we strive to empower individuals by offering local, accessible journalism in both English and Spanish.

About Us

For 15 years, Sopris Sun has been a cornerstone of independent local journalism in Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley. Our primary publication, The Sopris Sun, has long been dedicated to serving our communities with thoughtful, in-depth coverage of the issues that matter most. In 2021, we launched Sol del Valle, a Spanish-language newspaper designed to reach the 40% of our population that speaks Spanish, ensuring that every community member, regardless of language, has access to news and information.

We believe that true community empowerment comes from inclusive journalism that amplifies the voices of all, making sure that everyone is heard and informed.

Our Work:

With your support, Sopris Sun is able to:

  • Promote Language Equity: By publishing Sol del Valle in Spanish and working with a Spanish Language Advisory Council, we provide critical local news to
Spanish-speaking communities that might otherwise go underserved.

  • Empower the Next Generation of Journalists: Through our Youth Journalism Program, we give local youth real-world reporting experience and mentorship,
encouraging them to tell their own stories and become leaders in the community.

  • Elevate Diverse Voices: In 2023, we appointed our first Latina editor at Sol del Valle, significantly improving representation and ensuring that the voices of our
Latino and immigrant communities are heard.

  • Expand Our Coverage: Our publications cover a wide range of issues affecting our region—from public lands and education to affordable housing, mental health,
LGBTQ+ rights, and rural issues. We ensure that our readers are well-informed on topics that shape their lives.

Why Your Continued Support Matters

As a nonprofit organization, we rely on the support of donors like you to continue our mission. Your donation helps us produce high-quality journalism that is independent, inclusive, and local. It allows us to remain steadfast in our commitment to informing our communities, fostering dialogue, and amplifying voices that are too often overlooked.

Join Us in Building a Stronger, More Informed Community

When you support Sopris Sun, you’re helping to foster a stronger, more connected community. Your contribution allows us to continue to publish The Sopris Sun and Sol del Valle, ensuring that everyone in our diverse community can stay informed, inspired, and empowered.

Thank you for supporting independent, community-driven journalism.

Mission

Our mission is to inform, inspire and build community by fostering diverse and independent journalism.

The Sopris Sun and our new Spanish Language Newspaper Sol del Valle, focuses in-depth on issues and stories not covered by other local newspapers, providing a forum for the rich exchange of news and views and offering a unique platform for promotion of local businesses and events in Garfield County, Eagle County, Pitkin County, Mesa County and Gunnison County in English and Spanish. We cover issues ranging from the Environment to local government to education, rural issues, housing and cost of living issues, LBGTQ+ issues, Immigrant issues, BIPOC communities,

Background Statement

The Sopris Sun was established in 2009 as one of the first community nonprofit newspapers in the country when the former local newspaper, The Valley Journal, was purchased and shut down by a large corporate media business. The Sopris Sun brings together people who live and work in this diverse area of the Western Slope; Garfield, Eagle, Pitkin and Gunnison Counties. The Sun reaches out beyond tourism and business to families, professionals, ranchers, laborers, educators and people who make this place their full-time or part-time home. As a nonprofit, we are a trusted source of local news both in English and Spanish.

We had many accomplishments in 2021. The Sopris Sun launched our new journalism program for area High School Students. Through this program students are mentored and learn the art and business of journalism. They also get to be published in The Sopris Sun and el Sol del Valle. This year we also launched el Sol del Valle, our Spanish language insert. Working in collaboration with many groups across the area, our Spanish insert has content created by native Spanish speakers. On many issues you can also read the same article in English, which makes it a handy tool to learn the other language. We also continued to expand our program that provides free advertising to local nonprofits and struggling small businesses.
