THE WORD | A STORYTELLNG SANCTUARY

The Word is a literary arts nonprofit whose work is toward collective abundance. Our seed is storytelling. Our path opens through expanding models of literary community & publishing.

Mission

To promote voices from underserved communities and diverse backgrounds, to honor the stories of those who have faced adversity and injustice, and to provide a sanctuary space where these groups will see themselves in literature.

Background Statement

The Word | A Storytelling Sanctuary was founded in 2016 to build cultural equity through the literary arts. The Word proudly presents community-initiated programs, including: the Editor-Writer Mentorship, the biennial [margins.] Literary Conference + Book Festival, #MarginsBookselling, the BIPOC Bookseller Award, and a host of year-round Community Engagement Programs.

The Word promotes the inclusive representation of experiences in literature, including a diversity of experiences based on: racial, cultural, ethnic, or religious identity; gender identity; sexual orientation; physical, cognitive, or emotional disability; socioeconomic adversity; and personal experiences of adversity or injustice.
