Background Statement
Brief History and Evolution:
The Transformative Justice Project of Colorado, formerly known as the Colorado Juvenile Defender Center (CJDC), has a rich history of advocating for the rights and well-being of young people in the legal system. Founded in 2010, CJDC initially focused on legal advocacy for young people navigating the legal system in Colorado. In 2023, TJP restructured its leadership, mission and programs. Our programs aim to empower and support system-impacted youth and their families by providing a variety of services, including legal representation, court and educational advocacy, resource navigation and mental health.
Our programs:
Education First: provides legal representation for youth in school-related legal matters and tackles unjust disciplinary actions to keep young people in school. Training and awareness events empower educators and students with knowledge to advocate for fair treatment.
Community Cares: provides counseling and crisis intervention rooted in a decolonized approach for system-impacted youth. Court, educational advocacy and resource navigation also support with ensuring youth rights are upheld and needs are met.
LYRIC: Learn Your Rights in the Community provides classroom and community presentations to teach youth how to safely exercise constitutional rights during police encounters. This program is joining TJP in January 2025.
Believe in Youth: provides support for deregistering and expunging youth sex offense records to overcome barriers to education and employment.
