Background Statement
UCHealth Memorial Hospital is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization established in 1904 that provides comprehensive health services at two community hospitals (main and north) and more than 12 outpatient locations in Colorado Springs, CO. In 2012, it became part of the University of Colorado Health system (University of Colorado Health - Memorial Hospital System or UCH-MHS). In 2015, U.S. News & World Report ranked Memorial Hospital fourth among top hospitals in Colorado. Our mission is to improve lives in big ways through learning, healing and discovery, and in small, personal ways through human connection. Our primary service area is El Paso County (population 663,500) and our secondary service areas are Teller, Prowers, Fremont, Otero, and Pueblo counties. Altogether, we serve a population of nearly 1 million people, providing health care for about 200,000 patients and their families annually. Approximately 55% of our in-patients are Caucasian, 17% are Hispanic, 7% are African American; the remaining 21% are either Asian, Native American, or did not identify an ethnicity. As a nonprofit community hospital, we treat more (65%) of the economically under-served population than any other hospital in the region. In fiscal year 2015, we provided $50 million in uncompensated care. Approximately 39% of our entire patient population is under 250% of the Federal Poverty Level.
