Veterans Yoga Project is a national 501(c)3 on a mission to support recovery and resilience among our veterans, military families, and communities. VYP envisions a future where all those affected by trauma have access to a full range of mind-body practices and programs. VYP is committed to providing these tools and training in Safer, Predictable, and Controlled environments (SPaCe).

In Colorado, we have teachers who conduct on-line classes, teachers who present in-person classes, and advocates who collaborate with other Veteran and community service providers. Our in-person classes are currently at VFW and American Legion Facilities, Veterans Centers, Community Centers and yoga studios. We are growing our presence throughout the state. Your donations will help us bring other members to our VYP Colorado teaching team and expand our program throughout the state.

Mission

Veterans Yoga Project is a national 501(c)(3) on a mission to support recovery and resilience among our veterans, military families, and communities. VYP envisions a future where all those affected by trauma have access to a full range of mind-body practices and programs and is committed to providing these tools and training in Safer, Predictable, and Controlled environments (SPaCe).

Founded in 2011, Veterans Yoga Project is an International Association of Yoga Therapists member school, a National Board for Certified Counselors Approved Continuing Education Provider, and a certified Yoga Alliance School (RYS-200, Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider). Working in partnership with veterans, active-duty military personnel, student veterans’ organizations, veteran treatment courts, and other non-profit organizations, VYP-trained instructors and clinicians provide programs, resources, connections, and teach over 100 free yoga classes each week.

The VYP Colorado team currently offers in-person classes in Steamboat Springs, Greeley and Castle Rock, and several VYP CO teachers teach for the online studio and support various veterans programs. Your donations will help us bring other members to our VYP Colorado teaching team and expand our program throughout the state.

Background Statement

Research studies demonstrate what the veterans we work with already know, that veterans and civilians, men and women, old and young, all benefit from taking the time to breathe easy, focus clearly, move mindfully, rest deeply, and remember gratitude. VYP has worked with tens of thousands of veterans and active-duty military men and women using these practices and many have found relief from symptoms as well as gained resilience against life’s challenges.

Veterans participating in these programs have reported that they sleep better, concentrate and think more clearly, manage anger and aggression more easily, and find comfort in their own skin. Yoga may not cure post-traumatic stress disorder, but many veterans and active-duty individuals from all branches and eras of services find these practices to be a significant and necessary part of their recovery. 80% of veterans reported a reduction in stress after attending a VYP class, and 64% of veterans reported a reduction in pain. VYP Colorado’s aim for this project is simple: Provide VYP’s life-changing classes more accessible to veterans; allowing them to find a path toward healing and strengthen their connection with other veterans.

The purpose of this request is to increase access to VYP’s in-person classes in Colorado and strengthen its veteran community through the healing practice of yoga. Funds will be used to host mindful resilience yoga classes at various locations throughout the grant period. Classes will be offered to veterans, active-duty service members, and their families at locations closest to where they live or receive other veteran-focused health services.

VYP Colorado wants to provide Colorado veterans, active-duty military members and their families access trauma recovery tools such as yoga and meditation. Specifically, VYP Colorado intends to: (1) educate veterans, their families and caregivers about the impact yoga, mindfulness and meditation may have on veterans’ physical and mental well-being, and; (2) work with VAs, Vet Centers, VSOs, large employers and like-minded nonprofit organizations to teach/offer mindful resilience yoga (MRY) classes to our nation’s retired and active-duty military personnel.
