The VFW Foundation is the official 501(c)(3) charity of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Founded in 1899, the VFW is America’s oldest and largest organization of combat veterans. The VFW Foundation was created in 1996 to provide support for urgent VFW programs and services that secure, manage and distribute resources to improve the financial, physical and emotional needs of America’s service personnel, veterans and military families—individuals who have often personally sacrificed so much for us all.
Since 2004 the VFW Foundation has distributed (UNMET NEEDS program) over $13 million in financial assistance to U.S. service personnel, transitioning vets and their families for rent, mortgage, utilities, vehicle repair, food and basic assistance; Since 2014 $11 million (HELP A HERO SCHOLARSHIP program) in educational scholarships to veterans and service members; and $3.2 million annually (VOICE OF DEMOCRACY & PATRIOTS PEN programs) to middle and high school students through our two major patriotic essay competitions.
Not only do we effectively manage results driven programs, we do so with extremely low administrative costs. Charity Navigator, Guidestar and the Better Business Bureau, have all ranked the VFW Foundation among the best charities in the country. We receive no federal or state funding and rely solely on individual, foundation and corporate donations. Moreover, all of our programs are free-of-charge with no VFW affiliation required for assistance.
