Voices of Grief Support and Education Center

A nonprofit organization

At the Voices of Grief Support and Education Center, we provide a lifeline of hope and healing for those navigating the pain of loss in the Pikes Peak Region. Our mission extends beyond direct support—we also empower our community with the knowledge and tools to embrace healthy grieving and mourning practices. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we can ensure our services remain accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us break down barriers and offer these essential, life-changing resources at little to no cost. Together, we can ensure no one faces grief alone.

What some of our grief group participants have said:

“I cannot express how grateful I am that I got to attend the Voices of Grief support group. They carried me when I could not see a way out of the pain and suffering one experiences when their soul mate dies.”

“One of the best things about participating in a grief support group is the relief that comes with the realization, I’m not crazy and that other people have shared the same thoughts and acted in similar ways.”

“I felt welcome and understood from the very first meeting and that made all the difference in the world! I feel less alone and more connected.”

Serving the Community:

  1. Support: Our community events and support groups offer safe, affirming spaces where people are offered compassionate care and space to process their pain without judgment.
  2. Education: We provide training and support opportunities both for the general community and professionals, expanding their understanding of grief and mourning, and equipping them to offer compassionate support through a person-centered approach.
  3. Partnership: Our network of partnerships includes other organizations and providers who are skilled in offering grief support for particular needs. Through mutual referrals, this network is able to help the bereaved find access to the best care for their unique circumstances.

We offer support groups on a regular basis in spring, summer and fall, serving a broad variety of participants through our general group format options as well as specialty groups such as pregnancy loss or overdose loss. We also offer care for the general community through special events such as our annual Illuminating Hearts holiday luminaria event.

Our educational presentations are designed to support a variety of professional and general community groups, including therapists, social workers, faith communities, and senior living communities. Specialized presentations have been developed for caregivers, hospice teams, foster care families, and first responders.

The foundation for our grief support care is the companioning model as developed by Dr. Alan Wolfelt.  This model honors the normalcy of grief as a response to great loss and honors the uniqueness of each person's experience, providing support and validation as the bereaved walk the path toward reconciliation.

"Unlike the medical model of grief care, the companioning model does not seek to treat or cure, but rather bear witness, learn, and accompany. Companions offer a safe space, an open heart, affirmation, and hope."  - Dr. Alan Wolfelt

Mission

We envision a compassionate culture of grief expression where loss is honored and hope nurtures healing.

Our mission is to create supportive spaces to honor the natural process of grief and to educate our community in healthy

expressions of grief and mourning.

Background Statement

Our Key Values

‣ Grief is a normal, natural aspect of the human journey.

‣ Grief is not a disease to be treated or a problem to be solved.

‣ No one should have to grieve alone.

‣ We live in a grief-avoidant culture, but we can choose to honor our grief through acceptance, acknowledgement, and validation.

‣ We begin to reconcile our loss through mourning — which is simply the outward expression of our grief.
