Wild Aware: Protecting Wildlife and People, Season by Season
In Evergreen, Colorado, every season brings spectacular wildlife moments—along with new safety challenges.
In the fall, bull elk battle for dominance, sometimes charging at hikers, pets, or cars. Bears roam neighborhoods in search of food, tipping trash bins and climbing porches. Winter pushes deer, moose, and bobcats closer to roads and homes, raising the risk of collisions and conflict. By spring, protective elk mothers guard their newborn calves near Evergreen Lake, while young animals face dangers from fences, traffic, and human interference.
Wild Aware was created to meet these challenges with community-powered education and action. Our Barbed Wire Removal Program clears outdated fencing from migration corridors, giving elk and deer safe passage. Wildlife Watch at Evergreen Lake places trained volunteers on the ground during rutting and calving season to prevent conflicts and promote safe viewing. Give Me a Brake and Wild Eyes Safe Driving raise awareness and reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions in partnership with Colorado State Patrol. And through Backyard Wildlife Safety, residents learn practical steps—like securing trash—to coexist peacefully with our wild neighbors.
Wild Aware’s success depends on you. With your support, we can keep Evergreen safe, wild, and thriving.
