The Wild Animal Sanctuary (TWAS) is the oldest and largest nonprofit Sanctuary dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing long-term care for captive large carnivores and educating the public about the Captive Wildlife Crisis.
TWAS currently operates four facilities within the United States. Three of our Sanctuaries are located in Colorado - while our fourth one is located in Texas. Combined, they encompass more than 33,000 acres!
Each of our facilities has incredibly unique programs that rescue animals from horrific captive situations and rehabilitate them so they can live and roam freely within large natural habitats with others of their own kind.
We care for more than 1000 Lions, Tigers, Bears, Wolves, Jaguars, Cheetahs, Leopards, Mtn. Lions, Camels, Mustangs and many other species of animals!

The Wild Animal Sanctuary is the oldest and largest nonprofit Sanctuary in the US dedicated to rescuing abused, abandoned and exploited tigers, lions, bears, wolves, mustangs and many other species of wild and exotic animals, providing them with freedom, dignity and loving care for the rest of their lives in large-acreage habitats, while educating the public about the Captive Wildlife Crisis.
Established in 1980, Rocky Mountain Wildlife Conservation Center, DBA The Wild Animal Sanctuary, is a state and federally licensed zoological facility and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Originally founded on a farm outside Boulder, CO, TWAS eventually relocated onto 1,214-acres of rural, rolling grasslands near Keenesburg, Colorado, about 30 miles northeast of Denver. In 2018, the Sanctuary purchased an additional 10,000 acres of beautiful forested land in southern Colorado in order to open a second facility for current and future rescues. In 2020, the organization took over a well-established animal sanctuary in Texas, and in 2023, a fourth 22,500-acre facility for wild horses was opened in northwest Colorado. Altogether, the Wild Animal Sanctuary network now encompasses more than 33,000 acres!
The Wild Animal Sanctuary is the oldest and largest nonprofit Sanctuary in the US and has rescued animals from many countries around the world. The Sanctuary cares for hundreds of large carnivores including Lions, Tigers, Bears, Leopards, Mountain Lions, Wolves and other exotic animals, as well as Colorado's Wild Horses that have been removed from their native ranges. It is the first and only sanctuary of its kind to create large acreage species-specific habitats for its rescued animals. Animals live in large natural habitats with freedom to run, play and roam.
