Background Statement

Founded in 2005, WindWalkers (WW) Equine Assisted Learning and Therapy Center began with exactly two clients and only one horse. With steady and intentional growth, WindWalkers is now located on a beautiful ranch in Missouri Heights and operates with a dedicated and hard working team of 5 staff members, a herd of 11 horses, a devoted Board of 10, and over 50 adult and "junior" volunteers that provide thousands of service hours. With an indoor and an outdoor arena, our programming occurs year-round which is vitally important to many of our participants. We now serve up to 70 clients weekly including individuals with a wide variety of challenges and disabilities as well as many specialized groups such as at-risk teens, veterans, adults with developmental disabilities and children with autism. Since inception, WW can proudly boast providing 14,200 + service hours -"butts in the saddle" as we like to say - to over 4000 riders.

WindWalkers is where horses and caring professionals help families and individuals with challenges to grow and thrive- from Aspen to Parachute! Our service area includes 3 counties (Garfield, Pitkin, and Eagle), 16+ towns and a population of over 124,000.

At our core is a unique family-centric approach that strongly recognizes that one's challenge does not affect the individual only it equally impacts every member of their family and the community at-large. Since, family is the basic building blocks of our society, WW is firmly committed to aiding not only the rider but also their parents, siblings and care-providers. We are unwavering in our commitment to improving the physical well-being, behavioral development and emotional health of our students, their families and the communities of which they live in. The practical implications of our services are immense not only for the people with disabilities but the society as a whole.

WindWalkers also enjoys long standing cooperative relationships with other non-profits, schools, physical therapists, client families, medical/mental health professionals, teachers and county agencies. With an annual budget just over $350,000, WindWalkers' impact is far reaching.
