Background Statement
The Washington Street Community Center has a long and vibrant history providing a place to meet, learn, and socialize for area residents of all ages since 1967. Preschool, before and after school programs, a summer camp for elementary school aged children creatively planned around the diverse resources of Denver's urban environment, community dinners, yoga, senior lunches, tae kwondo, ti chi, social groups, neighborhood organizations, support groups, and room rentals for regular meetings and programs to weddings and special events define the dynamic and lively environment of the WSCC.
You already know that Washington Street Community Center has been serving the community for over fifty years, but did you know our building has been a staple of the West Wash Park Neighborhood since 1907? While WSCC has been serving the community for 51 years, our building has been serving Denver for over 100 years. WSCC has grown up with the neighborhood, we were here to serve the community when it needed it and flexible enough to adapt to its changing needs.
From its foundation in 1967, when a group of community members who believed that a community center would strengthen and revitalize the "neighbor helping neighbor" concept in an increasingly diverse society, Washington Street has aimed to be the community hub for Denver. We began as a soup kitchen, became a robust senior program, and now house an incredible four-diamond rated preschool. We have offered parenting classes and child care for struggling parents, we've given seniors a place to socialize and receive medical services in their neighborhood, and we've created a home away from home for so many of our friends and neighbors. People have learned to knit in our dining room, how to square-dance in the original church sanctuary, and have learned to read in our classrooms. We have served Denver for 51 years and are making plans to continue providing services for another 50 years. We want to serve our community better than ever before, and we want our building to serve us better than ever. Looking toward the future we want to establish a building endowment to ensure our building's longevity, and in turn the longevity of the organization.
But we cannot do that without your help. We rely on your commitment and investment to keep our community thriving.
Here are some examples of how your donation can be used to help support your community and WSCC:
- $25 can cover the cost of a hearing, vision, or speech screening to identify developmental issues for children need.
- $50 can support the Children's Program with one literacy home connection backpack to build emergent reader's skills.
- $100 can provide a nutritious lunch for up to 30 seniors
- $150 can provide space for one week's space rental to recovering stroke victims working together to regain their language skills.
- $200 can cover one month's space rental for a local Girl Scout Troop
- $500 can provide the space for the Visiting Nurse Association's foot care clinic for one month.
- $1,000 can grant professional development activities and opportunities for WSCC Staff.
- $25,000 can help us establish an endowment fund to keep our building serving the community for the next half century.
We are proud to serve the community and look forward to decades of building new traditions and programs. WSCC is the neighborhood hub: A resource for all; join us in serving your community for another 50 years.
