Background Statement
YVSC’s roots are traced to 2006, when a group of dedicated City of Steamboat Springs came together to create the “Green Team” to centralize sustainability in city planning and community awareness. The Green Team established two of YVSC’s longest running programs: Talking Green and the Green Building Tour. In 2008, the “Green Team ” transitioned leadership to a group of committed community members, who went on to establish YVSC. YVSC obtained its 501(c)3 status in July 2009.
Over 15 years, YVSC and community members like you have:
- Planted over 32,000 trees that will grow strong and tall to keep the Yampa River healthy, create wildlife habitat, and store carbon.
- Recycled more than 300,000 pounds of electronics reducing impacts from mining new materials and keeping these harmful materials out of our environment.
- Trained 33 future climate leaders through our Internship Program since 2021.
- Helped rethink the way we heat and cool our buildings to reduce our greatest source of emissions.
- Made the Routt County Climate Action Plan, which our community uses for climate planning and decision-making, an instrument of change.
