It is through the experiences of others that we can show how we help women in our community. Below are just a few of those experiences that have been shared.
This last fall, AWW helped "Jessica" after she tragically lost both of her children in two separate accidents. Understandably, Jessica's grief has been severe and she has had a hard time holding a steady job. AWW paid her mortgage for two months so that she didn't have to worry about also losing her home during this tragic time.
AWW also helped "Erin." Erin's husband was recently diagnosed with cancer. Erin works two jobs and her husband works three jobs. His diagnosis meant that he needed to take time off for treatment. The family, including their three young daughters, were hanging on for dear life. Bills were piling up and the family felt overwhelmed. AWW paid the family's bills during the father's treatment, allowing Erin, her husband, and children to focus their energies on healing.
"Amanda's" husband, the sole financial provider for the family, suddenly passed away leaving Amanda and her four children without financial resources. AWW helped pay one month's worth of bills for the family, giving Amanda time to grieve and then make a plan for the long-term survival of her family. Amanda wrote to AWW a couple of months later, saying "thank you for giving me some calm within a storm. Your help allowed me to grieve for my husband and then create a plan without having to worry about my mortgage and utilities payments."
Mission
A timely fund for local women - bridging the gap from need to financial stability.
Background Statement
In 2003, forty women, all community leaders, approached the Longmont Community Foundation for support of their idea to help women in the community who were "falling in the cracks." These pioneering women spotlighted an opportunity to provide timely resources to women in desperate need of financial assistance for transportation, childcare, education, housing assistance and health-related issues. In too many cases, women suffer because their needs do not fit specifically within the mission of existing community organizations or because they need immediate resources due to a sudden crisis. AWW founders set a goal of raising $10,000 - $100 from 100 women in 100 days. Women in the Longmont community understood the need and responded overwhelmingly: within thirty days the fund attained $15,000.
Organizers increased donor membership and obtained other sources of funding. Concurrently, professional partnerships were developed with established local non-profit agencies, churches and schools. These partnerships continue to function as the vehicle for requests distribution of funds; they provide AWW with the assurance that all other local services and resources are exhausted prior to contacting AWW and that the requests for funds are legitimate.
Funding requests are received from partner agencies or an AWW donor. Upon receipt of a request, the AWW Advisory Board Members review it and respond via phone or e-mail within 48 hours of receipt. Often, AWW will fulfill a request within 24 hours. In return, the recipient is to "pay it forward" by performing future acts of kindness and informing us of such acts.
In 2007, despite the excellent relationship that AWW had and continues to have with the Longmont Community Foundation and the Denver Foundation, AWW's Board Members decided to become a separate entity. On April 6, 2007, AWW attained our 501(c) (3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service. AWW continues to fund requests from struggling women in our community on a referral basis.
