I have been privileged to be an adoptie of my first Basset Hound and a few others from High Country Basset Hound Rescue. I was so impressed with the care in the process of getting my dog and I matched. They ensured that all the health needs of my soon to be dog were met. That we were the perfect match. Subsequently this caused me to dedicate many volunteer hours to this group. I have been a part of this rescue group for 22 years. I see the hard work everyone does for the love and passion of this breed. There are so many levels; transporters, foster homes, home visits, relinquishments, fundraisers, shelter checks, and so much more. Yes this is done by volunteers however, even with the generosity of their time there is still a great need for funding. There are many expenses in a rescue and in rescuing animals. Unfortunately the adoption fees do not cover those expenses.
High Country Basset Rescue has been a great asset to many communities throughout the state of Colorado. This rescue group has been able to remain in existence for more than 39 years. This is a remarkable accomplishment for any animal rescue group. The dedication that each of their volunteers commit to the education, care and placement of Basset Hounds is a testament to their impact on many communities throughout Colorado. Sadly with the increased costs of veterinary care, rescue insurances and other administrative costs they can not and could not accomplish this without funding.
This rescue helps unite Basset Hounds with forever homes. With careful screening and educating families; they are able to place these dogs with the right fit for the right family. This at times is not an easy task. This rescue helps lessen the impact on shelters by keeping dogs out of the shelters. As well as helping the dogs that may end up on the adoption merry go round if not euthanized. They network with other rescues for the placement and the well being of other breeds. Many homes have more than one breed of dog; by networking with other rescues this also lessens the impact on shelters.
The rescue has encountered many different reasons why dogs are without homes, each unique and many stories that are heart wrenching. Being a rescue that is breed specific helps streamline the process for people wanting to home a specific breed. With the help and process of the rescue they are able (human and dog) find a perfect match. We mostly get people who are devoted to the breed. However, the rescue affords people who have always wanted a Basset the opportunity to learn about the breed and see if this is the dog breed for them. The rescue also helps prevent backyard breeding or puppy mills. The rescue works with many reputable breeders and veterinary's to help prevent these situations.
My Family and I enjoy being a part of this group and enjoy going out in the communities sharing our experiences with this breed and the High Country Basset Hound Rescue. I plan on continuing to adopt dogs and dedicate my time to this rescue. I sincerely hope that with your generosity High Country Basset Hound Rescue can continue their work in our communities helping as many dogs connect to their forever homes for many more years to come .
Sincerely;
Carla

Over the years I have adopted three wonderful Basset Hounds from High Country Basset Hound Rescue. The rescue is outstanding! The volunteers make sure the dogs go to good homes and they follow up with you for a few months to see how things are going. I could tell they love the dogs as much as I do and are concerned for their welfare. After many years, one of my Bassets, Nora Jean, passed away and you and other volunteers shared my despair and tears. It was comforting that I could contact you and know you would understand my grief. Again, after weeks of Nora Jean's passing, I received follow up messages from a couple of the volunteers to see how I was doing. In this world, where everyone has a busy life, and, in addition, the stress of Covid, these volunteers reached out to comfort me.
At the annual Basset Hound picnic it is clearly evident how much the volunteers dedicate themselves to the rescue, not only at the picnics, but at other events as well. They also do other things for the rescue behind the scenes, i.e., baking and holding bake sales, transporting dogs to their forever homes, and rescuing dogs from bad homes. I have found the website to be very informative, user friendly, and up to date. When I adopt again in the future I will definitely go through High Country. They have earned my admiration and respect and I have recommended them to many others...
