KAFM Community Radio is full of friendly people dedicated to supporting community radio & great music; supporting local non-profits and each individual. I love KAFM and the friends that I have been fortunate enough to meet through it. It is the place where 'everybody knows your name, and they are always glad you came'!" -Renee Reynolds

"Something hit me today that is far deeper than just being connected to alternative formats throughout the world.  When streaming and texting my brother about songs being played on KAFM this week I have felt connected to my brother’s world as he continues with his treatments.  Thank you, the sounds of KAFM has made me feel I am there with him.  Your impact has become far greater than just sending out great sounds across the airwaves of the Grand Valley.  You have deepened the connection of support I have and can give to my brother’s journey. " -Russell

"KAFM exposes me to a whole bunch of new music that I would not otherwise have found and makes my soul feel good!" -Peggy Nagel

Mission

KAFM is a member-supported, volunteer-oriented community radio station dedicated to excellence and diversity in programming. KAFM fills a vital role in the Grand Valley of Western Colorado as an accessible forum for the presentation of music, arts, culture, information by and for the local community embedded in the the most eclectic variety of music on the air. KAFM uses its airwaves to build a better, more connected, thriving community by providing specialty interest talk shows and podcasts from local and regional Civic, Educational and Charitable Resources for our listeners.

Background Statement

In 1992, a group of dedicated civic-minded Grand Valley residents initiated the creation of a locally owned and operated community radio station. This action came about after the license of the existing public radio station (KPRN) was sold to Colorado Public Radio in Denver, leaving Grand Junction with no locally-originated programming. After seven years of planning, fund-raising and acquiring the required licensing and equipment, KAFM began broadcasting in March, 1999.

From 1999 to 2010, KAFM broadcast at its original 16-watt signal. In 2010, the Federal Communications Commission approved an increased signal strength of 300 watts. KAFM conducted a successful capital campaign that year to raise $116,000 for transmitter equipment and broadcast booth upgrades. The increased signal has allowed KAFM to reach a wider audience.

The onsite "Radio Room" was later created to provide a venue for concerts, art exhibits and other special events. The Radio Room has become a gathering place for the community to come together for a variety of cultural and learning events.
