RISE UP and independent public radio program Alternative Radio (AR) seek your support for general operating funds to continue presenting and preserving diverse voices and perspectives.
Ben Bagdikian, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Media Monopoly, defined AR as "an essential service for the communication needs of a democratic society." Ralph Nader called AR, "a ray of light in the media darkness featuring voices of proposals to strengthen our democracy." Noam Chomsky has explained, "AR is sometimes taken to stand for 'alternative radio.' A better reading would be 'authentic' or 'autonomous radio'-free from constraints of concentrated power, state or private."
RISE UP is a nonprofit media outlet and successor organization to Alternative Radio (AR), the longest-running independent public affairs program in the US. RISE UP presents and preserves voices and opinions on public affairs often ignored or distorted in the mainstream media. RISE UP records, broadcasts, and curates public speeches and interviews with today's best progressive orators to help distribute and preserve critical information for tumultuous times. RISE UP and Alternative Radio seek public orators who address crucial issues affecting the environment, media, immigration, race relations, international relations, education, the economy and democracy itself.
Alternative Radio (AR) was founded in 1986. After RISE UP was approved for 501(c)3 status in October of 2016, AR bequeathed its organization and assets to RISE UP. RISE UP began operating in its current capacity in January of 2017. Since AR's inception in 1986, listener response has been tremendous. AR's first nationally syndicated broadcast featured a two-part program with Noam Chomsky speaking on "The Right Turn in U.S. International & Security Policy." Listeners in the U.S. and Canada on nearly 250 stations have enjoyed AR's one-hour weekly programs ever since. In September 2022 AR began its 37th broadcast season.
