In Colorado, 5-10% of individuals experiencing homelessness have pets, and the well-being of these pets is deeply connected to the emotional and physical health of their guardians. This is why we're dedicated to caring for the lives on both ends of the leash.

As we enter this season of giving, think about what it truly means to be "home for the holidays." If home is where the heart is, then every pet we treat and every person we support has a home within the bond they share.

Mission

To provide free veterinary care and related services to pets of people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.

Background Statement

The Street Dog Coalition (SDC) was founded in 2015 in Fort Collins, CO, by Jon Geller, DVM, who recognized the profound bond between individuals experiencing homelessness and their pets. While these pets were deeply loved and cared for, there was clearly a need for free veterinary care to prevent and treat diseases, and to help preserve the strong human-animal bond. Since then, with Executive Director Katrina Weschler at the helm, The Street Dog Coalition has grown to over sixty teams nationwide. While we have expanded our reach, our roots remain strong in Colorado, where we host regular pop-up clinics in Fort Collins, Loveland, Denver, Longmont, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Grand Junction. Through our COHMO (Colorado One Health Mobile Outreach) Program, we also travel to rural regions of Colorado, providing community-centered healthcare services to people and pets with limited access to resources.

Colorado Gives Day has played a crucial role in allowing us to expand our teams and extend our reach. As we continue to grow, we're focusing on sustaining this expansion by reinforcing our foundation and relying on our community. None of our work would be possible without the dedication of our volunteer veterinarians, One Health professionals, students, sponsors, donors, and advocates who share our passion for this mission.

We’re also deeply grateful for our partnership with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Colorado State University’s Inclusive Health Collaborative, which allows us to provide routine access to free veterinary care and health services, while offering an invaluable experience to veterinary, social work, and 3rd-year medical students.

In addition to the contributions of our volunteers, both monetary and in-kind donations are essential to our continued growth. Our Legacy Sponsors (Merck Animal Health, Western Veterinary Partners, ElleVet Sciences, and Hill's Pet Nutrition) have made it possible for us to extend our impact, committing to support SDC with ongoing in-kind and monetary contributions.

In 2020, The Street Dog Coalition earned the Better Business Bureau® Accredited Charity Seal, and in 2023, we were honored with the Human Animal Bond Innovation Award in Public Service from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). We’re also proud to hold a Platinum Transparency badge from Candid and a 2024 Top-Rated Charity badge from greatnonprofits.org.
