ART FOR ALL AT THE ART BASE! - SINCE 1996

The Art Base is a nonprofit community art center centered in the heart of downtown Basalt, CO. Our mission is to foster creative expression in the visual arts, for all ages and abilities, through education and exhibitions. The Art Base has welcomed the community into its gallery and classrooms to explore creative expression. We believe that we can better understand ourselves, each other, and the world through art and art making. Come join us!

The Art Base's programs teach that art can help us express our values and build bridges between cultures. By supporting and achieving these goals, the Art Base is making a strong investment in the Basalt community. Together, we can paint a bright and colorful future for all.

Testimonials

“The Art Base has genuinely helped me through so much. I've been through some tough times and I didn't want to talk to people about how I felt. I didn't know how to show my emotions. But once I started coming to the Art Base, I just let everything I was holding inside go, and after the first experience, I just felt so free." — Lovanna, age 13

“I feel sometimes that our students feel like they're invisible. And then they come here, and they do the [HOME/un Hogar] project, and then they see it later in the community — months or years later — and they say, ‘Hey, I was a part of that. ’And it makes them feel valued, and it makes them feel like their culture is valued by this community. And I think that's the most important thing." — Leticia Guzman-Ingram, Home/Un Hogar & Basalt High School Teacher

“My daughter loves to draw. She told me the other day that she knows what she wants to be when she grows up – an artist! I am so thankful to have her be a part of the classes at the Art Base.”  — Almendra Orozco, Basalt Elementary School Parent

Mission

The Art Base fosters creative expression in the visual arts for all ages and abilities-providing a base of operations for artists in the Roaring Fork Valley through education, exhibitions and events that support and stimulate the vitality of our community.

Background Statement

The Art Base (formerly the Wyly Art Center) was established in 1996 by artist Deb Jones with the goal of supporting art as an essential human endeavor with the understanding that everyone at every age has the ability to develop and express creativity. The Wyly Community Art Center was originally established in Woody Creek as a project of Compass, a nonprofit educational foundation committed to experiential learning and educational excellence.

In 2005 the Wyly Art Center formed as an independent Colorado nonprofit with its own 501(c)(3) status. Seeking a more central location in the Roaring Fork Valley, the art center moved to the Three Bears building in historic downtown Basalt, and established itself as the mid-valley arts organization-serving the entire Roaring Fork community of artists and art enthusiasts.

In 2015 the Wyly Community Art Center changed its name to the Art Base, a vital new enterprise to nurture and celebrate the visual arts and artists of the Roaring Fork Valley.
