This Colorado Gives Day we are highlighting 4 of our important programs and invite you to join us in support!

Salleri Girl's Education Hostel:

In rural Nepal, it becomes very difficult for girls to continue their education after grade 10. Not only do societal norms make it so it is the biggest drop out time; distance to school and increase cost keep girls from continuing their secondary education. We know, however, this is one of the most critical times to keep girls in school. Here at The Small World we worked to find a solution to allow more girls in the Solukhumbu region to continue their studies and take one step closer to their dreams, by providing a safe place for them to live and financial assistance to continue on with their studies.

The hostel holds 40 girls each year and it cost $1,000 per girl to provide their tuition fees, uniforms, books, stationery and other expenses to keep them in school. This amount also provides medical care, computer classes, recreational activities and mentorship to make sure that nothing stands in the way of them completing their education and setting them up for success in the future!

Girl's Bachelor Initiative:

We don't just stop at Secondary education. In rural Nepal, the idea of being able to attend college is a pipe dream at best. With schools being located in Kathmandu and the cost associated most families have little hope to send their children, let alone their girls, to college. However, we know that educating girls is of upmost importance. Did you know that studies show that educating a girl not only improves their lives but it also dramatically improves the lives of their families and communities? This is because on average women reinvest 90% of their income into these entities where men on average invest 30%-40%. In fact, some studies show that if a country can increase its education of women by 10% their GDP will increase by 3%. Educating a girl is good for everyone!

We currently support 120 girls in their pursuit of a degree! $2,000 a year provides tuition, uniforms, books, mentorships and travel expenses to empower girls in their educational pursuits!

Many of the girls have chosen to pursue medical degrees. The cost associated with these programs are a bit higher and come in around $5,000 a year.

Solukhumbu Education Initiative:

Education isn't only a struggle at the higher education in rural Nepal. The devastating earthquake in 2015 and the pandemic have created a lasting financial burden on this remote region. Most of the trekking porters, single and vulnerable women, and daily wage workers lost their opportunity to work and provide for their family for many months and are struggling to come up with the costs associated to send their children to school. Boys and girls are continuing to be kept home as families struggle to provide financial cost for the most basic of needs.

The Small World saw the need of the community and jumped in to create a solution for the problem and our Solukhumbu Education Initiative was born! We currently support 400 children and pay for all costs associated with being able to attend school. From registration costs, down to uniforms, supplies, and a book bag we make sure that they have what they need to be able to continue their educational journey for only $200 a year per student.

Seed to Seed Program:

With the climate changes impacting the region, they noticed that families ability to grow the food they need to feed their families has become more difficult. With agriculture advancing every day with breakthroughs in permaculture and ways to combat changing conditions these communities are left behind. The Small World created the Seed to Seed program to empower families and communities to fight back against these odds and create sustainable systems instead. We form women's groups interested in agriculture to provide advanced training on a regular basis, quality seeds, green houses, tools, and market connections to not only be able to create a sustainable food source for their family, but to be able to sell the surplus to create economic prosperity for their families! We currently serve 300 women and the current cost to sponsor one is only $200 a year!

We are fully staffed by people that are indigenous and in-country ensuring we work with our neighbors to create lasting change!

At The Small World we truly believe that together we CAN change the world. We hope you join us!

From a student participant: "I am so happy and feeling lucky to have your support in my education. In our community many girls get married at a young age because their family are not able to send them for higher study... Thank you so much for changing my dreams into reality."
