Background Statement
Whiz Kids is a faith-based, after-school, one-to-one tutoring program for students who are under achieving in school. We match students in elementary and middle school with trained tutors who meet each week to improve basic literacy and math skills, as well as to build positive one-to-one relationships. We partner closely with public schools in Denver, Jefferson County, Littleton, and Aurora.
Whiz Kids (WK) was formed in 1990 by a group of concerned urban and suburban ministry and business leaders wanting to bring resources to under-resourced children to strengthen their academic potential and promote strong character. Our founders knew that helping children realize their full academic and life potential would be best accomplished through relationships with positive role models serving both as tutors and mentors. Whiz Kids began by partnering with urban churches that provided "safe haven" sites for tutoring sessions, public school administrators who identified students in need of the program, and suburban churches which provided committed volunteers. Whiz Kids continues to add program elements to better serve this population of youth.
