CenterStage Theatre Company operates two distinctly different programs: our youth theatre and our special needs company (Tapestry Theatre Company). This fundraising effort will focus on our Tapestry Theatre Production of Frozen Jr. which will be performed at CenterStage in August of 2024.
Our relationship with the children, teens and adults with special needs (All Abilities) and their caregivers is deep and profound. We provide a singular experience in showcasing the talents of our All-Abilities community through the creation of a shared theatrical experience that positively impacts actors, production staff, technicians, volunteers, and audience. Theatre promotes creativity, socialization, presentation skills and enhances communication skills and connection. In addition, our program blends together and creates a community of “mentors”. who perform alongside our actors of All Abilities. This not only ensures success but provides lessons for both mentor and mentee.
Coming in the summer of 2024, Tapestry will produce a youth production of the musical Frozen Jr. with an inclusive theater troupe of actors with disabilities along with neurotypical peers from school age through the age of 21. This program features performances at the CenterStage facility in Louisville during the first week of August. A small cast size (12-22) ensures the educational and community aspect of Tapestry productions. We offer flexible tuition fees for actors who are unable to financially afford the cost of a tuition-based performance due to the many financial demands on families who have a child with a disability. To be able to continue to provide leadership for this valuable program, stipends for the directors and staff are crucial. This production will be fully supported by artistic and technical theater staff. This program also offers one “sensory-friendly” performance as outlined above.
As may be evident, our special needs population and their caregivers are essential to the delivery of our Tapestry program. In addition, we work to provide social opportunities outside rehearsal to gain insight into the design of our programs. The company leaders are skilled in the delivery of these programs with strong attention to detail for the accommodation of a variety of disabilities. Elizabeth Goodrich (Tapestry Program Artistic Director; Tapestry Co-Founder) recently retired after decades of service as a Special Education teacher. Steve Wilson (CenterStage Executive Artistic Director) previously served as Artistic Director of PHAMALY Theatre Company (Colorado’s theatre company featuring a company of disabled actors).
