Today, more mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, and cousins are surviving cervical cancer more than at any other time in our lifetime. Let’s keep it that way! The Centers for Disease Control states that: “Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. However, in the past 40 years, the number of cases of cervical cancer and the number of deaths from cervical cancer have decreased significantly. This decline largely is the result of many women getting regular Pap tests, which can find cervical precancer before it turns into cancer.” Racial disparities do exist; more Black and Hispanic women get HPV-associated cervical cancer more than women of other races or ethnicities, possibly because of decreased access to screening tests or follow-up treatment.
Arts and Wellness is a faith-based grassroots organization that was formed in 2014 to raise awareness of a potential silent killer: cervical cancer. In the past 11 years, Arts and Wellness has raised money to provide 5,436 women with free cervical cancer screenings and educated caregivers about the importance of youths' preventive HPV vaccine, which reduces the incidence of cervical cancer and HPV-related cancers. It is estimated that life-saving cervical cancer screenings and HPV Vaccinations; Decreased HPV-related cancer by as much as 80%.
