Wow! Lot's of great updates on Rhett since last year's CO Gives Day. This summer he "graduated" from Soar Autism Center. His last day, he actually loved being the center of attention in his light blue graduation cap and gown.
It was so hard to say goodbye to those therapists who had worked with him at this location for a full year. It felt like losing a part of our family...lot's of happy tears when we said goodbye.
Rhett started Kindergarten this year at the same school. He is loving it! With the help of P2P and Advocacy Denver we were able to craft a very supportive IEP with a 1-on-1 dedicated adult.
He has already really bonded with his 1-on-1, his classroom teacher, his new SPED teacher, and new school speech teacher. He is starting to come out of his shell using his AAC device and repeating way more verbal language. We can understand about 15% of the words he says independently without his talker. We have continued our AAC Speech sessions this year. He blew us away with typing a very clear full sentence a few weeks ago at the Great Wolf Lodge. He said/typed "I want to go to the room." Ha!!! We gladly left the chaos and retreated to our room for some relaxing. He definately knows what he wants and is sometimes patient with us while we figure out what he is telling us. He still loves Bluey, riding on his new tag-along bike with adaptive seat, jumping and being tickled on our bed, piggy backs and shoulder rides, toy story, loosing remote controls, running barefoot, grabbing handfulls of leaves and crunching them between his fingers, and screaming/screetching after he demands that Dad "RUN" after him. ha!!
I have continued to thrive working for P2P-CO this year! P2P-CO.org I can't imagine doing anything else at this point in our journey. The connections, conversations, and genuine community are fueling me each day. With the help of the P2P team we have made over 190 Support Parent Matches statewide so far this year, Launched P2P-CO new ambassador's volunteer program with shirts and stickers that I helped design, and held our first in-person event in 4 years.
I think I can now say that I completely undertand the meaning behind the statement, "The days are long, but the years are short." We can't wait to see and hear what this year holds for Rhett! He truely is rising to the occasion and the sky is the limit!
It would mean the world to us if you made a small or large donation to P2P-CO this holiday season! Your donation ensures that all Colorado families get the support and resources they need to fiercely advocate for their child with special care needs. The impact of your donation is powerful to families like ours.
Click the blue donate button and change it from "general fund" to "Parent to Parent of CO" from the available options in the dropdown menu so that donation gets added to our total.
