Imagine a world where no child goes to bed hungry.
Unfortunately, here’s the reality:
- 1 in 7 Kids Live With Hunger
- 7.5% of Children in Wellington Live in Poverty
In the last two decades, as the town of Wellington has expanded, so has the importance of the Wellington Food Pantry. Fifteen years ago, a dozen or so families would come to pick up food. Now the Food Bank averages 70 – 80 families receiving food each time it is open. Around the holidays, over 1e0 families are served.
Food insecurity in Larimer County often goes unnoticed. Hunger hides behind closed doors.
It lives in the home of a single mother who skips dinner to make sure her children have enough to eat.
It lives in the apartment of the grandfather who has to choose between a meal and taking his medicine.
It lives in the bedroom of a young child who has to make it all night without food until the next school day when she knows she will be fed.
We believe that no one should go hungry.
- 8.4% of Seniors are Food Insecure Seniors, who so often are limited by fixed or limited incomes, were among the most consistent pantry clients.
- 11% of Wellington Residents Have Income Below Poverty Level
- 10.8% of People in Wellington Lack Health Insurance
We know from speaking to our clients that many rely on our Food Pantry for more than half of the food consumed in their home. This support is especially crucial for those who may be unable to work or are living on fixed incomes.
We find that the annual value of pantry access to pantry client households is between $600 and $1000, and the value per pantry visit is between $40 and $60.
BUT THERE IS A SOLUTION
The Wellington Food Pantry is working to ensure that no one goes hungry.
