Across cultures, owls have symbolized everything from wisdom to the underworld. Here in the western US, the Spotted Owl has become a symbol of wildlife conservation and habitat protection. Mexican Spotted Owls, one of three subspecies of the Spotted Owl, depend on forests and rocky canyons to nest and hunt for prey. As a top predator, these southwestern ecosystems need Mexican Spotted Owls to help maintain balance. The historic loss of this iconic species is not only detrimental to our psyche and ecological heritage, but also to the integrity and perseverance of the ecosystems which they inhabit.
We at Bird Conservancy of the Rockies are monitoring this threatened species and studying habitat conditions that will help it thrive again. Each year we hire a crew of a dozen wildlife biologists to conduct Spotted Owl surveys across 7,000 square miles of Forest Service lands. Surveys often include cross-country hiking in rugged and/or remote landscapes. Your contribution can help our project succeed. Twenty dollars covers gas for a biologist to drive to their survey locations, $60 buys a headlamp so they can find their way around during their nocturnal surveys, $100 pays them to conduct surveys in a night, $250 buys a broadcasting unit they'll need to call for any owls in the area, and $1,000 helps cover the cost of analyzing and sharing the data they collect. Thank you for your support and engagement in the conservation of this important species!
