Every Black Young King Needs a Mentor

In 2018, I attended the Crowley Foundation’s Leadership Summit, themed Opportunity. At the time, I had no idea that a single event would shift the course of my life. That summit introduced me to Dr. Martinez, a mentor I didn’t know I needed. From the moment we met, he saw in me the potential I often struggled to see in myself. He didn’t just guide me—he challenged me, empowered me, and reminded me that my dreams were worth the effort.

Through his mentorship and the support of the Crowley Foundation, I found the strength to navigate college’s challenges, staying grounded in my purpose despite obstacles. Whether it was figuring out my major, managing the pressures of life and school, or simply believing in my ability to succeed, Dr. Martinez was there. And with him, so was the Crowley Foundation—a community of people dedicated to creating opportunities for Black and Brown youth to heal, grow, and lead.

Graduating college was a milestone I couldn’t have reached alone. The Foundation was instrumental in my journey, equipping me with resources, connections, and, most importantly, a belief in my own capacity to achieve. It’s a gift that every Black young king deserves—a mentor like Dr. Martinez and a community like the Crowley Foundation.
