On November 13, 2023, I experienced a life-altering event after surviving a drug-facilitated sexual assault that nearly took my life. This horrific experience has compelled me to pay closer attention to the challenges many survivors face and to advocate for a reconsideration of the harmful aspects of the legal system that often deepen our trauma. I feel driven to share my story and speak out for those who may still be suffering in silence.
It's deeply painful to experience such immense trauma, and attempt to do the right thing by reporting it, only to feel doubted and treated in a way that strips what you have left of your humanity after being victimized in this way. It's truly distressing to imagine the additional hurt that comes from a system you should be able to trust for support but instead feels like a betrayal. Everyone deserves to be heard and validated, especially after experiencing such a violating crime.
CCASA has played a crucial role in my healing journey by helping me find and use my voice, not just for myself but also for those who are unable to speak out. Recently, we came together for a Town Hall event that provided an invaluable platform for other survivors to share their stories. This organization doesn’t just empower individuals; they are dedicated to the hard work behind the scenes, advocating for new legislation that supports survivors and ensures their voices are heard.
Colorado Denim Day is a meaningful initiative that ties into the global Denim Day movement. In Colorado, various state agencies, businesses, and organizations invite their employees to contribute $5 to wear jeans on Denim Day. These donations play a crucial role in supporting the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault, which is dedicated to addressing and preventing sexual violence across our state. I not only want to help CCASA reach its goal of $10,000 but exceed that goal, ensuring ongoing support for current and future survivors. And, it's especially important this year to help fund CCASA's initiatives due to the federal funding cuts.
So, I am reaching out to my network to inspire you to consider donating at least $5 to this campaign. Your support is invaluable, not just to me but to all the Survivors of Colorado. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a remarkable difference in our journey. Thank you for your consideration, kindness, and generosity.
