My professional journey at RMMFI started when I was pursuing an MBA at Western Colorado University. I had the opportunity to intern with RMMFI in 2023 and am proud to share that I work there today. Little did I know that a non-profit organization such as RMMFI resonated so deeply with my personal life prior to my time at RMMFI.

Growing up in a low-income/immigrant household, like many, my family struggled to make ends meet. My dad worked full-time, however with no legal documentation, my mom struggled to maintain a stable job. My mom, who has always had an entrepreneurial spirit (her parents in Mexico owned a convenience store to which she regularly tended), did not let unemployment stop her from generating income. Luckily, she befriended a well-known small business owner in Longmont, Gloria Zamora, who invited her to sell goods and make a percentage off of goods sold. Before we knew it, our Red Chevy van was stocked with bed sets, curtain sets, shoes, boots, jewelry - you name it! Before she knew it, she had built a clientele base that regularly sought her out.

While my mom has since become a citizen, she has continued to sell jewelry for Gloria. It is thanks to small businesses such as Gloria's that my mom was able to support our family with additional income. Whether it's having been previously employed, purchasing, or booking services - we all have benefited from small businesses in one way or another.

RMMFI helps individuals with backgrounds similar to my mom's take their entrepreneurial journey to the next level. Everyone deserves a shot at their dreams, so let's start today by giving.

Thank you & be well,

Miriam E. Olvera
