Matching Fund!

Update posted 2 years ago

The first $3,500 in donations will be matched - doubling the value and impact for this program at Cal-Wood.

Harv Teitelbaum:

"Students of color and those from underserved communities have traditionally not been encouraged or mentored to pursue careers related to forestry or climatology. I see providing that encouragement and mentorship as a multiple benefit for the students, their communities, their chosen professions, and the environment."

About Cal-Wood's High School Wildfire Research Program

Cal-Wood will engage 40 teens of color in authentic research where they can help to further scientific knowledge on climate change, fire mitigation and restoration through three 5-day residential field courses held at Cal-Wood in summer 2023.  While camping at Cal-wood, teens will participate in field and lab wildfire research and data collection and on-the-ground fire restoration projects led by CU Boulder,  CSU scientists, the Nature Conservancy and Cal-Wood.

Specific objectives include:

  • Offer three 5-days long field courses in the summer for 40 teens from underrepresented backgrounds, the majority of whom will be Latinx and/or first-generation students, in a project-based field and lab experience.
  • Inspire the next generation of foresters, land managers, and environmental scientists.
  • Develop teen participants as informed leaders motivated and confident in communicating about climate change impacts and wildfire events

This fund will provide scholarships to low-income and students of color, breaking down financial barriers for participation!
